Xunantunich dominated the whole region at a certain point in history. The town was built around the year 400 BC and was apparently abandoned around 1000 AD, nearly a century later than the other cities in the region. In the era of its greatest glory, Xunantunich was home to more than 10 000 people. The view from the top of El Castillo is also exceptional. You can clearly see the border between Belize and Guatemala. The border line is quite easy to recognize and the view over the region is truly unmatched.
