Just about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Punta Gorda in the Toledo District is one of the most interesting Maya cities of southern Belize – Nim Li Punit. The highest pyramid on the site is more than 12 meters high. Some statues were obviously incomplete, which suggests that the work was literally stopped between one day and the next. Open tombs and interesting engravings have also been found throughout the site. During the greatest expansion of that city, up to 7,000 Maya lived there. The surrounding environment is nearly as stunning and captivating for visitors as the historical remains. You will often hear the haunting sound of the black howler monkey, which is one of the loudest animals in the world.
