Sometimes also known as Santa Rita Corozal, this place is located just outside the city of Corozal in the Corozal District. The findings suggest that in the times of the Maya, the place was apparently named Chetumal or Chactemal, which is also the name of the nearest Mexican city across the northern border of Belize. Ceramic artifacts suggest that the city was already inhabited by 2000-1200 BC. It prospered until the arrival of the Spaniards, perhaps because the city served as a source of stone material that was needed for the construction of nearby roads. Due to this fact, it will probably never be possible to determine how far this city actually reached. Archaeologists have found rare artifacts here that give evidence of religious rituals being performed that were likely associated with bloodletting and various forms of sacrifice.
